10 Simple Ways to Practice Gratitude as a Family This November (Without the Stress)
As the holiday season approaches, I want to share 10 Simple Ways to Practice Gratitude as a Family This November (Without the Stress).
Every year, November seems to arrive in the blink of an eye. Between harvesting the last bits of autumn, preparing for cooler weather, and seeing Christmas decorations popping up in stores before Halloween is even over, Thanksgiving can easily get lost in the shuffle.
As parents, we want to cultivate a heart of thankfulness in our homes. We want our children to look beyond a single holiday meal and learn what it truly means to give thanks to God daily. But between school schedules, daily chores, and family routines, adding one more thing to the calendar can feel overwhelming.
The good news? Teaching gratitude doesn’t require elaborate crafts, hours of prep time, or expensive activities. Simple, intentional daily habits are what stick with our kids for a lifetime.
Here are 10 simple, low-stress ways to practice gratitude as a family this November.
1. Start a Daily Gratitude Jar
Keep a simple mason jar and small scraps of paper on your dining table. Each day—during breakfast or dinner—have family members write down or draw one thing they are thankful for and drop it in the jar. Reading them all together on Thanksgiving Day is always a highlight!

2. Practice Scripture Copywork at Breakfast
Start the morning on a peaceful note by reflecting on God’s Word. Having your kids write out a short verse of praise, like Psalm 100:4 or 1 Thessalonians 5:18, helps anchor their minds before the busy day begins.
3. Take a Gratitude Nature Walk
Head outside for a cool autumn walk. As you walk, challenge your kids to point out specific things God made that they are thankful for—from the changing leaves to the crisp air and blue sky.
4. Create a Tabletop Thanksgiving Tree
Find a sturdy fallen branch on your walk, place it in a glass vase, and cut out simple leaf shapes from construction paper. Write one blessing on a leaf each day and hang it from the branch using twine.
5. Use Intentional Mealtime Prompts
Instead of asking the standard “How was your day?”, try asking questions that encourage reflection:
- “What is something kind someone did for you today?”
- “What is a simple comfort you were grateful for this morning?”
- “Who is a friend or family member God blessed us with?”
6. Sing a Hymn of Praise
Music is one of the easiest ways to hide truth in our children’s hearts. Focus on classic hymns like Count Your Blessings, Doxology, or For the Beauty of the Earth during your morning routine or bedtime. We often play worship music throughout the day; it’s a beautiful way to keep Jesus on our minds and pause for a Worship break!
7. Do a Simple Act of Kindness Together
Gratitude naturally overflows into serving others. Bake treats for a neighbor, write a card to a church volunteer, or gather extra canned goods for a local shelter.
8. Use Guided Gratitude Journaling
For younger kids who love to draw or older kids who enjoy writing, give them a quiet 5-minute block during the day to journal about God’s goodness using a simple daily prompt.

9. Keep an Answered Prayer Box
Sometimes we forget how much God has done for us simply because we don’t write it down. Keep a small index card box of answered family prayers to review whenever someone needs a reminder of God’s faithfulness.
10. Anchor Your Routine in Morning Time
You don’t need an hour-long devotional to make an impact. Spending just 5 to 10 minutes each morning reading a Psalm, sharing a prayer, and reflecting on a gratitude prompt creates a calm, worshipful tone for your whole home. Building a rhythm around gratitude and rest is a great way to anchor your day.
