Teaching Your Kids the Names of God (And Why It Matters)

When our kids are little, one of the first things we teach them is the names of the people who love them. We teach them Mama, Dada, Grammy, and the names of their siblings and friends. Why? Because knowing someone’s name is the very beginning of building a relationship with them.

The same is true in our walk with God.

God doesn’t just give us one general title in Scripture. Throughout the Bible, He reveals Himself through dozens of distinct names—each one uncovering a different facet of His character, His heart, and His loving power.

When we help our children move beyond simply knowing about God to understanding who He is through His names, their prayer lives change. Scripture comes alive. And the God of the Bible stops feeling like a distant figure and becomes their refuge, provider, and shepherd.

Why Teach the Names of God to Your Kids?

Here are just a few beautiful truths your kids will discover as you explore His names together:

1. He Is Our Provider (Jehovah-Jireh)

In Genesis 22:14, God reveals Himself as Jehovah-Jireh—The Lord Will Provide. When kids learn this name, they begin to understand that they can bring every need, big or small, to Him with confidence.

2. He Is Our Caring Shepherd (Jehovah-Rohi)

David writes in Psalm 23:1, “The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.” Teaching kids Jehovah-Rohi reminds them that they are personally known, guided, and protected by a loving Shepherd who gently leads them.

3. He Is Our Peace (Jehovah-Shalom)

When anxiety or fear creeps in, pointing our children to Jehovah-Shalom (Gideon’s altar in Judges 6:24) gives them a tangible anchor. They learn that peace isn’t just a feeling—it’s a Person.

4. He Is Our Strength and Fortress (Elohim)

From the very first verse of Genesis (“In the beginning God created…”), Elohim shows us the supreme power and majesty of our Creator. He is strong enough to hold the universe, yet loving enough to care for us.

Simple Ways to Weave This Into Your Homeschool Day

You don’t need an elaborate, hours-long curriculum to make Bible study rich and engaging. Here are a few low-prep ways to incorporate the Names of God into your daily routine:

• Morning Basket Routine: Introduce one name per week during morning gathering. Read the corresponding Scripture reference and talk about what that name means for your family today.
