How To Make Your Own Foaming Hand Soap
Do you want to learn how to easily make your own foaming hand soap? You are in the right spot my friend!
Did you know that I actually haven’t bought hand soap in over 5 years? Well, you wouldn’t actually know that but it’s true!
I used to be a Bath & Body Works 5/$23 kinda girl. If you know you know.
Why make your own foaming hand soap?
I talked a little about my background with artificial fragrances in my 3-ingredient all-purpose cleaner post if you’d like to read more about that.
The skin is the largest organ of your body and is porous, meaning it absorbs what you put on it! This PubMed article says “Many common ingredients (e.g., fragrances, preservatives) are known skin allergens…”
Basically, artificial fragrances mess with my body and I’m not a fan. This led to some research and I stumbled into making my own hand soap, hence the reason I no longer buy it!
I don’t buy body wash either!
Let’s get this straight, I am not dirty. I still wash my hands & body. I am actually somewhat of a clean freak if you will. So I do appreciate and value the importance of sanitation!
Anywho, I make this super easy foaming hand soap and body wash for our whole home and have been for about 5 years.

Steps to make your own foaming hand soap:
- 2 TBS of Castile soap, pour into foaming soap dispenser

- Add a few drops of essential oil*
- Add 1 tsp of fractionated coconut oil*

That’s literally it!
I love using Dr. Bronner’s unscented pure castile soap. I have used a few other brands but love the quality and the foaming power!

Below are a few of my favorite essential oil blends to make my soap smell nice and fresh:
- peppermint, orange, tea tree
- citrus fresh, eucalyptus radiata
- vanilla, bergamot, cinnamon
- lemon, tea tree
You can be as creative as you want with these fragrance blends!
I recommend using fractionated coconut oil to add a moisturizing component to your foaming hand soap. The castile soap can be a touch on the drying side so adding in extra moisturizing will help. Just don’t add too much or you’ll get a waxy feel after washing your hands.
Remember to use a foaming hand soap dispenser or this will turn into a watery mess and not have the same effect.
Here are a few of my favorite foaming soap dispensers I have personally used:
These amber glass foaming soap dispensers are heavy-duty and great quality, we have in our primary bathroom.

I have these amber plastic foaming soap dispensers in the basement and powder bathrooms.

These clear foaming soap dispensers are in the kid’s bathroom and my shower for body wash.
Let’s talk cost for a sec.
This foaming hand soap breaks down to about $1 per full dispenser depending on the castile soap and add-ins you use.
If you compare the B&BW hand soaps at $7.95 each that is a massive savings!
With one 16oz. bottle of castile soap I can make this soap 8 times!
I am all about pinching those pennies so this low-cost toxin-free foaming hand soap is a win-win in my book!
We can Rejoice About that!
Are you ready to make your own foaming hand soap now? It’s super easy to do and a great alternative to store bought soaps that are full of artificial fragrances and toxic ingredients.
Keep in mind there will be a learning curve if you will in that this soap does feel different than traditional hand soap for the first few uses. After a while it feels perfectly normal.
Leave me a comment below after you make this foaming hand soap! I’d love to know what you thought of the process and what oil blend you used!
Happy soaping – Amanda
