We have been in our home for a little over a year now and as we continue to update our stuck in the 90’s house I am attempting to create the look I love on a budget. This sign fits right into that as I used products and tools I already had on hand.

Items I used to make this DIY wooden house number sign:

  • Scrap piece of wood, or wood cut to size
  • Metal house numbers and screws
  • Wood stain – Special Walnut
  • Polyacrylic topcoat – Ultra Flat
  • Rub and Buff – Antique Gold
  • Old rag
  • Synthetic paintbrush
  • Drywall screws
  • Tape measure
  • Drill and drill bits
  • Sander and sandpaper
  • My favorite Microsander for small details and edges

Thankfully for this DIY project, I had everything I needed to complete without purchasing anything – I call that shopping my house, and is a win in my book.

From another project, I found a scrap piece of wood and had my husband cut it down to size to fit in our space by the door.

I also re-used the silver metal house numbers originally. I wanted to purchase stylish new ones but instead, I just gave them a little facelift to save money – my specialty haha.

The scrap piece of wood was a standard raw wood and I knew I wanted a warmer rustic look so I used my favorite wood stain by Miniwax in special walnut.

All-in-all this DIY house numbers sign took me all of a few hours from start to finish.

How to make a DIY wooden house number sign:

  1. Measure your intended space where you will hang the sign to determine the size of your wood piece
  2. Buy desired wood or use a scrap piece and cut to size
  3. Sand smooth with 240 grit or higher
  4. If desired, stain to your liking – follow the instructions on the product
  5. Once stained, finish with a clear top coat, sanding in between dry coats
  6. Attach your numbers to the wood sign with screws
  7. Hang the sign on the desired place on your house

Make sure to measure the space you intend to hang the sign so you know what size to cut your wood to.

Depending on the style you are going for I recommend finding a piece of wood that is 1/4 inch to 1/2 inch thick.

Buy or use scrap wood and cut to size.

If you choose to, stain to a color of your liking. Be sure to follow the directions on the product.

Seal with a top coat to protect from outside elements.

For best results, sand in between the top coat layers once dry with 240 grit or higher!

I reused the original silver metal house numbers, but I wanted them to match the exterior of the house in gold or black. I remembered that I had some Rub ‘n Buff, so I used that to transform the numbers into an antique gold color.

To use the rub-n-buff you apply it with a clean cloth and buff the color on, a little goes a long way!

Screw the numbers into the wood using a drill.

Here are a few number styles I was considering when shopping around:

Floating modern black house numbers.

Vintage style house numbers.

As a little life hack, to attach the sign to the house, we skipped two of the number screws when attaching the numbers to the wood and then used drywall screws in those screw holes to attach to the house.

This way we didn’t have to attach a hook or bracket to the back of the sign or drill into other areas of the wood sign.

I added some rub-n-buff to the screw tops to help them blend in and look flush.
