Lately, I have been loving the look of vintage designs and using patchwork and fabric for decor. I wanted to add some of those elements to my youngest’s room to add an extra personal touch and bring out the vintage feel I am drawn to.

Items you need to complete this DIY fabric letter nursery decor

  • Hot glue gun and hot glue sticks (or fabric glue)
  • Fabric scissors

I found a wooden letter in my daughter’s initial at the thrift store for $1! What a steal!

Check out Hobby Lobby for the letter you need or head to your local craft or thrift store. If all else fails order from Amazon, or the cheapest option will be to cut out your letter from a piece of cardboard.

The fabric I also found at my local thrift store, a bag full of various fabrics for about $3! Again check your thrift stores or head to a fabric store and browse their clearance aisles. The good thing is you don’t need much of each fabric since you cut into smaller strips.

I also lucked out and found a hot glue gun and glue sticks bundle at my local thrift store for about $4, but Walmart and Amazon carry them as well!

Fabric scissors are a little easier to work with but regular sharp scissors will do the job as well!

Bonus points if you can shop your house for these items making this easy DIY fabric letter free 😉

How to make DIY fabric letter for nursery decor

  • Prep the letter (cut out if needed)
  • Decide what fabric colors/prints you want to use – create a look and aesthetic you like
  • Cut your fabric into wide strips depending on the size of your letter. I cut about 2.5-3-inch wide strips that are long enough to wrap around the backside of your letter
  • Roughly assemble your strips of fabric in the order that you like best along your letter to get your pattern figured out
  • Begin with the first piece of fabric at one of the ends of your letter
  • Lengthwise fold the edges of your fabric over to cover up the rough edges, and glue to the back folded side if desired, just use minimal hot glue or a fabric glue so it doesn’t bleed through to the front

  • Place the fabric around the end of your letter and fold the excess to the back and glue to the letter and on top of each side of the fabric to secure both ends of the fabric to the back of the letter
  • If there is excess fabric be sure to cut it off so you do not see it from the front

  • Take your next strip of fabric and again fold the edges to the back then wrap around your letter with the spacing you desire for your fabric pattern
  • Glue in place
  • Repeat this step until your letter is covered with all strips of fabric glued to the back

Depending on your letter this may be an easier or tougher process. I was using an S so I had to adjust for the curves in the letter. I just tested the pieces out before I glued them down, I suggest doing the same to get the feel for how you want it to look.

Tips for making this DIY fabric letter

  • Cut all your fabric strips out before you begin gluing
  • Cut your strips to the same width/length for a proportional look
  • Make sure your glue gun is hot and ready before you use it (also use it with caution – HOT!)
  • Don’t be afraid to remove a piece and start over if you’re not pleased, hot glue is pretty easy to work with and can be peeled off once dried!
